Have we made the “Mycorrhizal put the ‘fun’ in fungi” joke yet? We have? Yeah, well, it’s a good joke because it is true. Christine Elaine‘s one-woman musical vehicle never fails to be interesting, and in every release, followers of the Network know we are dedicated fans. Except this time she outdid herself. Or we should say themselves, since ‘The Way Out Is Through‘ is a collective effort featuring a whole bunch of antifascist metal usual suspects in instruments and vocals, like Lust Hag, Tumultuous Ruin, Vanessa Funke, Tachanka, There Is No Light Here, and, and, and…. And this is something we absolutely love, the feeling of family, camaraderie, making music as a collective effort, a celebration. These ties to us are as important as the music itself, and frankly, if as a Network we helped even a tiny fraction of these people find each other, then it makes it all worthwhile.

But, how about the music itself? Well, this time Mycorrhizal went the way of blackened electronica (or blacktronica), immersed in IDM and trance beats mixed with grim guitarwork and gnarly vocals (and clean ones too), like Mysticum meets Choronzon meets 90s EBM and techno, but make it queer. In her own words, “a fractured and chaotic work that manifests as an assemblage of blackened electronica anthems channelling its collective energies against the modern spectres of climate collapse, transmisogynist violence, Palestinian genocide, and society’s collective rejection of empathy.”

And it is fucking good. However, it will inevitably piss off all those whiny ignoramuses that have taken to loudly complaining how “black metal should not be fun and whimsy, we hate cute animals, black metal should be dead serious, raaaaar“. Frankly, we consider that a bonus to an already excellent work that is angry, liberating, weird, fun and sad at the same time. Cause unlike kvltlords, we contain multitudes.
