Review

Sometimes you don’t want the modern post-metal or some of the same overplayed persiflage of the same old second-wave Darkthrone song. Sometimes you want something easy, straightforward, something dark but also fun. Sometimes you want to replace the “blegh!” with an encouraging “Come on!“. Time for something old-school with Witch Hill.

‘Bury the Soul Within…‘ guides us through a horrific, delusional world. Within gory and gothic horror imagery, we are presented with actually quite modern topics. Songs like “Blood Chains” hint at the delusional identitarian policies dictated by conservative elites with lyrics such as “Defend your God / Infant blood / An army of saints / A choir screams” followed by “Cross the legs / A body breaks / Under the mounds / Ancient howls“. Beautifully woven into those images of the fantastic horror which defined the songs of first wave bands like Venom or classic Heavy Metal like Iron Maiden.

A small thing to notice is also the production. As it fits with this style, it is of course more of a lo-fi sound, but still. The drums, which are probably programmed, use decent samples. Finely mixed, so neither snare nor cymbals will just gallop straight through the eardrum. Also, the guitars are decently clean-played, a thing which is unsurprisingly rare in this genre, as well as the overall sound is less harsh than most productions, so it’s actually quite nice to listen to on your hi-fi system.

All in all, good fun, especially thanks to the lyrics and riffs. So enjoy! And maybe read a good old horror classic afterwards.
