Woodsguard is a black metal project from the Appalachians, specifically from West Virginia. The band is deeply rooted in the region, its natural environment, and above all, its people and political initiatives. The album ‘Fortitude‘ features samples, which are described on the band’s Bandcamp page and are mostly related to activism, including local ones. The band supports numerous initiatives, including the West Virginia Trans Coalition, Appalachians Against Pipelines, the West Virginia Women’s Health Centre, and the West Virginia Miners Wars Museum. So we have political engagement, the local community and its issues, and a deep attachment to the incredibly fascinating region that is Appalachia. And what about music?
‘Fortitude‘ is a 6-track mini-album that blends black metal with death metal and even elements of grindcore. It features distinctive vocals reminiscent of a grindcore or crust band, a fast, pulsating bassline paired with raw and complex drumming, and surprising riffs. The whole thing sounds great; the production is top-notch, the band itself has considerable experience performing live, and ‘Fortitude‘, which we’re discussing today, isn’t their first album. The lyrics are definitely political, as well as allegorical and poetic.
We highly recommend them! If you like atmospheric black metal riffs, paired with a fast-paced and relentless rhythm section, and passionate, shouted lyrics, then Woodsguard is definitely for you. Also, remember that, just like the band members, you too can support local grassroots initiatives – whether they’re queer groups, “Food Not Bombs”, local anti-hunting and anti-fascist groups, or environmental movements.
