Review: yell. – Ostatnia Godzina (Full album, 2024) | Dark punk

Black metal is often the music of nature where the artists come from. In the case of yell, it’s eastern Poland, whose forests are getting smaller every year. In the album Last Hour from this year, the theme of forests will recur quite often, but it will not be an idyllic fairy tale, but full of sadness, darkness, despair but also anger.

The music that yell. plays is dark punk, where black metal riffs create an atmosphere of gloom and darkness, and the distorted bass is mercilessly rumbling to the crust-punk drums. On top of that, there is angry and emotional yet blackened vocal, screaming anger at the capitalist system, where human stupidity and the greed of the rich are destroying nature. Poland’s forests have a dark side of their own, in addition to massive logging operations against which there have been protests, they are filled with hunters. These killers, very often wealthy reactionaries with ties to the government and the church (which sadly is still a thing in Poland), have a strong lobby despite numerous cases of shooting bystanders or animals such as dogs. What is frightening is not only the scale of the deaths under the guise of tradition but also their insolence.

Fortunately, there is resistance against them as well. And it is such forests that this story is about, it should also be added that people are dying in the forests of northeastern Poland in the name of the execution of the racist border policy of Fortress Europe. The dark atmosphere of a forest full of bloodshed, from which emerges a punk and political message in defence of nature and the promise of revenge.

The music is amazing and the album is definitely memorable for a long time.
