Review
Welcome again, ABMN readers and listeners. Today’s upload is of the new project Saint Delirium’s debut album ‘Oh, The Wonders of Damnation’, with a heavy and oppressive atmosphere throughout with its mixture of dissonant black/death metal and noise. From the same person behind our previous upload, The World Sleeps Beneath, she shows off her skill in creating music that is just as emotional as her other project, but for an entirely different reason.
With the dissonant elements clear from the very start, tension gradually builds throughout, creating almost a sense of unease. the gentle piano and emotional spoken word at the start of Upon Such Gilded Heights almost lulling you into a gentler pace before exploding into another burst of heaviness and in doing so, releasing all the sense of agitation that had been built up until then and carrying it out to the end with closing out the album with the title track Oh, The Wonders of Damnation. the lyrical references in every song to religion and spirituality, and also heresy and damnation reminds us all of our insignificant place on this earth in the grand scheme of things, and merely adds to the crushing feeling of the instrumentals. it doesn’t make for a necessarily easy lesson; then again, described as “a story about humanity” by Saint Delirium, it’s not really supposed to be, is it?
