Review

Valkos is a Lithuanian project that combines black metal with punk in a uniquely and unconventionally innovative way. Well, the band definitely goes beyond the general boundaries of black metal and punk, in a way that makes it seem almost progressive. Atmospheric melodies are contrasted with more raw and punk moments; there are occasional slow tempos that build mood, as well as different vocal styles and synth moments, but the whole is definitely more black metal. Each track delivers something interesting; the whole thing is really solid black punk.

The lyrics deal with environmental issues such as animal extinction and ecological collapse, but also with consumerism, the work cult society or the place of the individual in capitalist reality. The song “Socialinė (ne)lygybė”, which is a cover of the ska punk Lithuanian band Lipnūs Macharadžos Pirštai, is certainly an interesting one.

According to the band’s declaration, this album “…rejects the proposed world we are inheriting from our ancestors. We refuse to turn a blind eye to all the suffering enabled through quiet violence in everyday systems, domestication of free will, reckless consumption, endless capitalist greed and mankind’s dominance over nature. Influenced by eco-feminism, we wish to encourage radical empathy for nature, animals, and each other. Beneath the noise of consumption and conformity, we search for something raw, something true and authentic.”
