Review
War metal is a complicated genre. Every time we receive a submission that includes the word “war” – unless it is preceded by the noun “class” – our eyebrows go up in suspicion. The genre has long been tied to a romanticised view of conflict, and by now we should be collectively aware enough to recognise war for what it is: a power game played over the bodies of innocent people. There is nothing to admire or applaud in bellicism. And, unsurprisingly, those who do glorify it often lean toward fascism.
Precisely why we are featuring today DEATHFUCKINGWOUND, a duo from Finland, that purposely want to be associated with what they stand for: antifascism. ‘Void MMXXV‘ is their debut EP, six songs of “Visceral chaos agitation” which proves to be more than just a slogan.
The record unfolds as a series of dense, oppressive bursts, where thick, brutal death metal riffs collide with the concision of grindcore. Alternating between sudden surges and brief pauses, it creates a claustrophobic, suffocating atmosphere. Vocals and guitar tones remain thick and brutal while occasional noise-like layers add further dissonance and instability. Not our usual cup of war metal, death metal or grind, but a mix of them all.
In other words, DEATHFUCKINGWOUND offers no flashy solos or dramatic shifts, and ‘Void MMXXV‘ is an abrasive, uncompromising debut that rejects grandiose myth-making, and it is confrontational by its sound alone. A chaotic force that we are more than willing to have on the antifascist side.
