Review: ‘Yeast Veils’ by Mycorrhizal / Stygian (Full split, 2024) | Experimental BM, sludge

A few days ago, the D.I.Y label Liminal Dread Production came out with the awesome split that we are presenting to you today. The release we are talking about is Yeast Veils, which consists of two projects – Mycorrhizal and Stygian. These are both original projects, so naturally their combined album is one of those intriguing ones. In brief, Mycorrhizal is experimental and heavily electronic black, and Stygian is blackened sludge/noise.

It’s hard to describe Mycorrhizal‘s music in a few words, and that’s because we have here a multitude of styles and so far we have described the music of this one-woman project from Winsconsin here on ABMN as having elements of trip-hop, hip-hop, electronica, ambient and, of course, black metal. With this, however, black metal is a somewhat peculiar matter, as it’s hard to attribute any of its distinctive elements to this music, it’s more about the impression of “black metalness” that keeps eluding us.

In the three tracks on this split, we get different proportions of the aforementioned elements and three varied musical stories, and it should be noted that the vocals are equally original, variable and differently applied. Undoubtedly an intriguing thing, as is always the case with this project.
