Review

It’s probably rather obvious for everyone who follows ABMN that music is not necessarily meant to “please” exactly; black metal is one of the most abrasive genres of music out there, and we love it not despite but because of it. But there’s music that pleases you despite being harsh, and there’s music (or “music”, in the case of noise) you WANT to listen even though it disturbs and bothers you…

And that’s where today’s album, ‘Gates of Submission‘ by US outfit Deep Recess, comes in. Don’t get us wrong, though – their brand of psychodelic blackened death is amazing, and NOT what we expected at all from the description! We expected something like Hail Spirit Noir or Borknagar combined with maybe Sulphur Aeon. Still, instead, this sounds like Black Sabbath was jamming during a really, really nightmarish LSD trip (guitarists Courtney and Kyle in particular often sound like they’re channelling Iommi).

There’s something deeply unsettling in how the music is put together here, and… very difficult to put in words, honestly – one can point to the brown cover, to the way the guitars are shredded in the very beginning of the album (and they’re NOT using “shredding” in the way metal usually does), in how the drums start and go unpredictably at times, in how suffocating the vocals are, but it’s something that really must be heard to be believed. We don’t promise you’ll “like” it – but we’re certain ‘Gates of Submission‘ will deeply, deeply impress you.
