Review
Antti Mikonmäki, responsible for, among other things, the Kartano project, which we presented to you a few years ago, returns with a new album from his other project, Aovum. The album is titled ‘Abandon‘, and as always with Antti, we are dealing with a highly experimental spectrum of metal — unless, of course, music that combines and blends different genres of metal with unexpected electronics such as techno, jungle, and industrial, alongside neoclassical and folkish melodies, already has a name.
Each track is carefully composed, with these different elements woven together interestingly, and solid metal vocals throughout. Each of Antti’s projects and albums tells a different story and draws inspiration from different places, cults, nature, the occult, or existential themes. The mood of Aovum is darker and more gloomy than the rather joyful, fairy-tale-like Kartano, making Aovum’s music a clear outlet for this kind of melancholy.
With all this in mind, we encourage you to check out this album, as each track feels like a separate journey, both musically and lyrically. There is a lot to discover here, a lot of meaning to be drawn out, but at the same time, it also works perfectly as background music.
The author knows our values very well, and although the album is not strictly political, we can certainly find echoes of opposition to fascism and racism among these occult allegories.
