Review
After having the chance to share its first single with us here at the Network, along with all the visuals and the video clip, we move from “Dissociative” onto the whole block of work that Hypomanic Daydream put out back in July, ‘The Yearning‘. We mentioned before how this work would deal with mental health in the shape of relations with others and situations such as alienation, detachment or yearning (for the artist, specifically a gay yearning).
Aside from the clip that gives “Dissociative” a cast idea from the mind behind to draw visuals from abstraction to the shape of emotions into a warped form. ‘The Yearning‘ keeps a solid line of work from the path that’s followed from that point, if there is any path other than boundless expression, because the musical frame would keep mutating to unexpected points from start to finish.
In technical terms, it is an avantgardist form born from art rock and progressive/experimental rock (references to the RIO movement), tacking to death metal as the only real constant, spearheaded with a characteristic high-pitched wail that defines the vocal work alongside lower growls and gutturals.
The sound also highlights the presence and relevance of synths and keys to give a final turn to most songs, among more occasional instruments thrown into the mix. The album is actually quite brief, but it has probably the play time it needed to, because in the 8 tracks it has, it carries a certain high tension most of the time, flowing from feeling particularly light to being as oppressive as a cage, a perfect representation of what a work molded from epic boss anthems from 90’s RPG could encompass to express a burst of emotions and the feeling of absolute chaos in a reality that threatens to collapse in no time.
