Review

Crust punk is the original antifascist black metal: coming from anarcho-punk bands of the 80’s that listened to the heaviest metal bands of the time (such as black metal progenitors Hellhammer/Celtic Frost and Venom) and took on the super-distorted power chord riffs, but left out the shock rock antics in favour of political lyrics. Just take a look at the selection of bands on the backpatch-filled jacket that is the cover of Carnivalia‘s “Só anarquia realiza utopia” to see the modern version of this perspective.

But today we are presenting ‘A construção da identidade punk‘, which is the second full-length album from this Brazilian anarchist band, in collaboration with “Ruptura Punx” record label/collective. According to the band, this album talks about anarchy, pessimism, self-construction, and stands against the State and liberalism. The music is quite powerful, relying on brutal, simple riffs against incessant drum pounding and “fucked up throat” crusty vocals, while raising the bass guitar at levels where most bands don’t dare. It is an immediacy of aggression/expression that is missing from a lot of music nowadays and therefore is really recommended by us, especially to metal listeners who won’t dabble in punk because “it’s not heavy/extreme enough” (you sure? just listen…)
