Anyone up for some sludgy, atmospheric songwriting? Someone up for that sick bass? Hidden Since The Foundation Of The World delivers just that. This, as they themselves put it, neo-psychedelic doom metal outfit from Amsterdam that provides us with fat drums, fuzzy bass, melodic guitars and thoughtful, yes, surprisingly emotional vocals on this double single consisting of the two tracks “Man Of Stated Age” and the nearly ballad-like “Bad Winter“.
Do we even try to interpret these lyrics? The former is seemingly mocking the middle-aged corporate man going through life unbothered by all the sickness of the world, well, even while causing some of these problems, while the latter could be pointing at the global impact of Western hegemony sold to the people as peace and prosperity. But that would really be better described by the artists themselves. What’s certain is the underlying instrumental side of songwriting here. Because while “Man Of Stated Age” might well be the known, if well-practised, doom-breathing sludge, at which some bands would just simply stop and rely on, “Bad Winter” gets more epic. Pay attention to the melody opening in the first chorus on the line ‘and call it peace’. At this point, the melody just starts slapping.
This project seems to have sorted out its style, and with the release of these two studio recordings, it seems to be worth keeping an eye out for future releases. It’ll sure be worth it!
