Review

Ashenheart is a new band featuring musicians from the UK and the USA. It was founded last year. Spearheaded by Amanda Kauffman, who writes the music and performs most of the instruments, they’ve already released a full-length album called Faded Gold, which was based thematically in the Elden Ring game and offered a combination of eerie, often dissonant black metal with a hint of “blue cover” melodic epicness and death metal, bringing attention to the band.

Their second recording is a four-track EP called Tales From Eternal Dusk, and we can definitely hear an evident improvement on the already promising material. Dark-sounding keyboards reminiscent of early Emperor recordings are more prominent and present in the songs, as are guitar leads, courtesy of new member Steve Wiener, while vocalist Alex Loach spits a black metal rasp that is powerful and ear-splitting. The death metal influence is also more evident, as the band wants to remind us (in their own words) that they’re not just a black metal band.

Lyrically, the band leaves behind Elden Ring to concentrate on their own fantasy story-making. A very good EP that shows Ashenheart have already covered a lot of ground in just two years of existence. Also, please consider supporting them financially, as the band has been hit by hardship lately. Amanda, a trans woman living in the USA, is suffering from physical ailments that require expensive therapy for her to keep playing guitar like she used to.
