Review

Split albums are always a treat, allowing bands to reach each others audience, forging scene bonds, giving the listeners more than just 2 separate EPs (and cheaper for both the bands and fans) and all around a rare example of community and cooperation in a “business” that is built around emphasizing egos. No wonder punks loved them so much and their entry in the metal hive mind came through the more punk adjacent genres of death/black and doom (do power metal bands even do splits? Anyone heard of one?). Anyway, this one is between two US based bands Nirensimt and Scoured with each band represented by 2 tracks. Chicago’s Nirensimt seem to be the more black metal aligned of the two with their sound bringing frosty hints of 90s scandiblack, specificaly the cold and space-y kind, melodic tremolos and blasts and raspy vocals and shouted curses galore, you know exactly the sound we mean and if you are like us you can’t get enough of it.

Philadelphia’s Scoured on the flipside lean more towards a more aggressive blackened, thrashier death metal approach, more suited to frantic headbanging, or at least that’s the first of their tracks, cause surprise, the second one get’s doomy, really doomy, and atmospheric too, reminiscent of 90s melodic death metal (not melodeath, you know the one we mean) except, surprise, 2/3 of the track in they turn it around again and go back to furious bashing for a nice explosive finale. All in all, this split has enough variety in the black and eath metal confines to satisfy plenty of tastes, and boring it is not. More music from both bands please! Also, more splits by other bands too!
