Review
We’re happy to welcome back Kaatayra, the one man project of Caio Lemos from Brazil that has already released quite a lot of albums (either with this name or with other projects) that have since became a stape of forward-thinking metal, or alternatively contemporary (progressive? post rock? folk?) music that counts metal among its basic influences, at the very least. The long waiting time of 5 years between 2021’s Inpariquipê and this follow-up album not doubt has created a lot of expectations, which -let’s cut to the chase- “Caminhos de Água” absolutely does meet. There are many different ways that we could describe Kaatayra’s sound and every single of them would be insufficient by its own. Sometimes Kaatayra sounds like “metal played with acoustic instruments”. At other times it sounds like 70’s progressive music from some obscure film soundtrack. Sometimes there are elements of traditional indigenous brazilian folk music, like parts with frantic percussive poly-rhythms, to be followed by clean singing that reminds contemporary genres like salsa. And after that, a blastbeat will come accompanied with a flute and an acoustic guitar. Kaatayra is a journey to musical soundscapes with turns that are impossible to guess. It’s a flowing vision (after all the title translates to “watery paths”) uniting music of different times and different places. A completely unique band that we are simply happy to consider them part of metal’s modern cultural legacy as well.
