Review

Good Friday, dear listeners. Today’s talk is about a revered returning band to our hub and channel, no more than the Münster outfit Manøver (for which we covered their previous studio release, ‘Taken‘).

If this is the first time the reader and listener are having them on play, Manøver find themselves in between the gloom and hopelessness of sludge with a cutting, crusty edge, a pinch of d-beat and death metal, and have been active in politically vocal spaces almost since their inception.

Alongside their activity within and outside the German scene, this 3-piece ensemble has achieved a fair traction to this very point, and we are thrilled to share their latest work (which dropped this year non-casually on May 1), titled ‘Insurrection‘.

In ‘Insurrection‘, the band didn’t really stray far from their previous release or signature sound, although the crushing chaos cast on it could arguably be more palpable in this release. Themes do a logical continuity too as one would expect, this album going even farther, letting the gloom and explosive faster parts speak on their own in the company of the album cover, visually commenting on a socio-political climax of historical corruption that bred from its cradle what we live through today, in a half-satire manner of sorts, wishing nothing else by this effort for this cycle to end by all means.

The album kicks with an atmospheric intro that immediately opens for strings and the metallic echo of the cymbals preparing the ground for what’s to come; we will see the following dynamic for the majority of the record in a frenetic waltz between the aching vocal work (in its lower tones and higher gutturals), lead by frantic riffs and heavy drops flirting way more with the doomier face of sludge. Each song would, naturally, break this formula to some extent and keep the listener hooked to every turn and distorted wave.
‘Insurrection’ summons the decaying spirit in the foundations of sludge with the unmatched rage of a more death ridden crust blend, touching more closely cases like Dystopia in the way of casting the bleakest optics on our current day and what lies within any and all layers in its surface, following greatly within this conceptual frame in a great and well done album that knows exactly where and why to keep you hanging.

Also to note, the features in this latest Manøver album are top notch, including which was their previous singer, as well as for No Sun Rises or Gvillotine. A warm hug from us to the incredible people featured here and to our friends in Manøver!

Now, time to let the flame ignite and hearts race by the beating call of ‘Insurrection‘!
