Review
Today, we are proudly presenting the blackened crust duo Enumbria from Chile. Their newest record ‘Statvs Qaos‘ may aesthetically gather all the stereotypes for some black and death metal, but that’s what we’re here for, isn’t it? Apart from that, we are visiting a genre in which the slight differences set the overall tone. And looking at Enumbria, that is what they are doing.
We can start with the cover artwork. Look at the overall look. The biblical symbolism, the pyramid of the hegemonic elites. The foundations held by the militarised police force towered from the burning abyss. Maybe a bit forward, but the message is set.
So we venture into production. The first thing we will recognise when listening to this record. At first it would seem quite lofi, but then it’s also cleanly played, drums without any low end but thrashing. Technically advanced without any questions. And they do indeed slap. Just listen to the toms accompanying the kick. The fat guitars push the riffs in a quite well-balanced mix. This record is thought through, and it seems that, in line with the anti-capitalist refusal of streaming services, this thing is produced with tapes in mind.
So what about the actual music? “Statvs Qaos” delivers the most solid blackened crust, with a strong pronunciation of ‘blackened’ in the second half of the record. But first, it starts rather groovy, rather downbeat, with its strongest highlight on that note with the track “Fuego al Poder“, which surely could be a live banger. Following that, we have “Satanama“, which immediately shows us a darker overall sound. Here, we appreciate the vocals and how good they pair with this black metal appeal. Two more tracks worthy of listening to, if interested, would be “Sexy y Muerte“, which just invites the listeners to think about this classical over-the-top can-like snare sound, and if that’s something you appreciate, you will have your fun with this one. Just blasting forward. And “Muerte al Tirano y a Dios“. A track that one last time does a really good job of bringing forward this blackened death, blackened crust side of the project.
So all in all, Enumbria is completely worthy to listen to, especially if you’re into blackened death metal or “crvst”, while, and we can be sure about that, if you see them in a lineup, just go see them live and convince yourself!
